2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class - More than entry-level luxury

The redesigned 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class has become more than an entry-level luxury car.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class was redesigned for 2020, and as Mercedes has unveiled a more affordable A-Class sedan, the CLA is no longer the most affordable vehicle in the German luxury brand’s US lineup. This allows the CLA to grow in new and interesting ways, becoming a more dramatic performance luxury car.
The first things you’ll notice when comparing the new CLA-Class to its predecessor are the headlights. Gone are the massive eagle-eye headlight clusters, replaced with far more elegant units. These wedge-like headlights are designed to more closely connect the CLA with its larger sibling, the CLS (another 4-door coupe).
But the real treat is inside the CLA, where the driver and front passenger are treated to a comfortable, modern, and upscale cabin with a dramatic multi-tier dash and vintage-looking climate vents. At night, it all comes alive with available ambient cabin lighting, which individually illuminates the various tiers and vents. In fact, when you change the climate control, it will illuminate red or blue as you raise or lower the temperature, respectively.
Both of the CLA 250s feature a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 221 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque that gets sent through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The base CLA 250 sends power to the front wheels, while the CLA 250 4Matic that we drove adds the all-weather benefit of all-wheel drive (AWD). The CLA’s steering is light but refined, and its cornering is precise without being too stiff. Overall, the CLA is athletic, but you pay no penalty in ride quality for that.

This car has a bland boring exterior design for a $50K price tag, I can see it going out of style fairly quick along with its depreciation in the next couple of years.

Very nice sedan I like the style of it I would definitely lease any car or suv regardless of manufacturer . Love the power it gives over the a220 which is smaller engine and storage . The amg model may be too much horsepower for my leadfoot. Thanks for reviewing .

American CLAs are oddly specced. Here in the UK, you can get keyless entry on regular CLAs (As long as they're Premium Pack or above) as well as the AMG versions but the Burmester sound system is only available on the pure AMG models, not the regular ones 😩

Crazy overpriced. I'll take a Genesis G70 3.3L TTV6 over this fwd based box and save thousands. I also don't want MBUX selling my personal information to the highest bidder as it ease drops on my every word. Then there is the fact that Mercedes doesn't make a car that can last a year out of warranty. Crap

I'm amazed by "I don't want to buy a new cable just cause I bought a new car". You would buy an overpriced $50k+ car and not consider getting a $10 dollar cable that will be useful to you for the years to come? or maybe you're just a forward thinking hater and you hate change?

One of the dumbest review issues I've seen in awhile - from multiple reviewers (likely because they aren't purchasing the cars and just trying them out for a week). People are who like a car enough to buy it will easily trade in a crappy inefficient tradition USB 2.0 cable for the USB - C.

@Bob I am not sure the trim model would make any difference since the trim doesn't normally fail. Now,,honestly, are you saying the the above named brands aren't typically associated with higher than average repair rates--- and costs.

  • Bob

    Bob

@Jon McCargar Really? I thought most 'premium' german brand like MB, BMW, Audi, and even VW were known to have somewhat good build quality. Of course it might be depends on which trim you're going for but overall the interior build quality has been the benchmark for years. The Asian manufacturers are coming in hot though and are closing the gap slowly but surely.

This exact car will be about 30-35k at 1 year old with low miles...So wait if you must have one

  • ru5ty_fps

    ru5ty_fps

I mean no one buys a car for investing. People buy cars for enjoyment and realize that they won't get their money back when selling. My 03 Honda CRV goes for $3-5k for the mileage on it which is only 103,503 miles on it when it was in the $30k-35k range new. The thing is cars depreciate, it depends on what car one buys that has its own depreciation rate.

  • Like A Sambu D

    Like A Sambu D

The current c class feels like a downgrade. And you can bet when the new design comes out it will be several thousand bucks more expensive than the current outgoing model. When u put the same options on cla or c class, the price gap will be huge. Its so stupid when people come here and say omg for that price id just get the next model. No u idiot ur never going to get a base model merc. With 2 options and taxes ur already looking at $10-15kprice jump per model.

Mahmoud Ghoneim yeah it’s a lovely car, I don’t rate hatchbacks but it’s all personal preference. What it came down to for me was S class and E class were too big of a car, so narrowed it down to cla or c class. Same exact size but cla has the latest interior so it was a no brainer. A class is also a good choice but I personally don’t like hatchbacks

  • Mahmoud Ghoneim

    Mahmoud Ghoneim

Fay Ahmad with that sense the A class hatchback in AMG style is the real deal for me.

  • Fay Ahmad

Mahmoud Ghoneim most people don’t care about rwd nobody takes country roads for fun lol irrelevant. Cla looks sportier snd has better interior and tech. Literally only thing c class has over it is few extra hp and that’s the c300 only. If you’re bothered by it get your cla remapped
